Designer Cosmetics and Drugstore Alternatives

A lot of us would bat an eye on people that love drugstore alternatives. However, what really makes this drugstore brands a lot less appealing than the designer ones? Is it because it is cheaper? Designer cosmetics have well-known brands? Is the packaging for designer cosmetics a lot prettier? Well, whichever the reason is – there really isn’t a big difference between these brands when it comes to creating them. A few manufacturers have admitted to using the same formula for creating the same high end product and drugstore product. The only difference with the items were, as you guess it – the packaging! Yes, so you are pretty much shelling out a lot more money just to see the same product in a better palette or container. This applies to a lot of beauty products such as makeup, skin care items, perfumes, etc. However, this does not apply to all brands. There are high end independent brands that guard their formulas and keep it within the company. Though, most mass produce brands are usually guilty of this. Remember that most drugstore alternatives are approved by the same sector. It would not be released to the general public if it is not completely safe. Even high end products back then experienced bans due to toxic chemicals in their products. Don’t take drugstore brands lightly. Try some of them out and see for yourself.

Formaldehyde in Your Products

Everyone knows what formaldehyde is and what it is used for. However, not everyone knows that one out of five skin care or cosmetic products contain formaldehyde. It is not a major component of these products, but some of its traces can be found in it and can become more prominent in time. There is no proof that exposure is harmful for the skin or body. Though, there is no harm in avoiding them. Products that contain sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, DMDM hydantoin, bronopol, diazolidinyl urea or imidazolidinyl urea may contain formaldehyde. A not so well known fact that Brazilian blow outs and some hair treatments contain formaldehyde gas.

Makeup with SPF

A lot of makeup brands are now coming out with makeup with SPF. However, this does not protect the skin as much as actual sunscreen would. Even if your makeup contains SPF, you still need to apply sunscreen. If this makes your makeup too heavy or creamy opt for makeup that does not contain SPF.

Hypoallergenic and Non-comedogenic

These words are the ideally the same with “Fat Free” and “Organic” when it comes to food. These words are mainly marketing words that only help entice buyers to notice their products. However, most companies that add these labels to their items have little to no proof to back it up and the fact the there is no requirements or testing guidelines to use when it comes to these products is another reason to doubt them. However, this does not apply to all brands. There are certain ones that have the testing, research and approval to back this up. You may need to do some research to find out if your hypoallergenic product is really hypoallergenic.

Liquid Foundation

Liquid foundation is a must have beauty item. Most foundations are thick, creamy or dry. This can leave your skin looking bumpy and create visible streaks. Most makeup artist prefers to use liquid foundation since it can be layered easily, mixed with other products and easy to blend with the skin.

Lead in Lipstick

This old news to some, but still a prominent problem today. Studies have shown that 400 shades of well-known lipstick brands contained trace amounts of lead.
