How often should I exfoliate my face?

Our skin is a protective layer of our body that protects us from harmful elements. Like armor our skin needs a little buffer and tuning. The skin on our face is incredibly sensitive and more prone to breakouts than any other parts of our skin.

Our skin constantly regenerates and skin cells constantly shed off. An average adult sheds up to 50,000 dead skin cells every minute. Every minute our skin sheds, but at times this constant shedding can cause build-up on the skin. Buildup on the skin can cause blackheads, acne and breakouts. Dead skin cells aren’t the only thing that can cause build up, oil and dirt accumulated in the pores can cause it too. Not removing this from your pores can cause blackheads and oily skin. This will help moisturize the skin and remove the flaky texture. This will leave the skin looking healthier and softer.

You can use an exfoliating mask three times a week if you have really dry and flaky skin. Exfoliating masks are gentler on the skin than facial scrubs. Facial scrubs have sand like granules on them; these granules are responsible for removing pore buildup. Facial scrubs that have granules that are too big can damage the skin, so avoid using ones that have big granules.

If you live in a tropical country or are exposed to pollution, you have to exfoliate your skin more than twice a week. People that are also naturally oily should exfoliate their skin more often.

Apply facial scrub gently in a circular motion. Over exfoliating can leave the skin red and irritated. If you have new scars or breakouts on the face do not exfoliate. Let the scars and breakout heal and dry out first. Exfoliating new scars and acne can cause it to worsen and leave dark spots.

If you have incredibly sensitive skin use a natural no chemical exfoliator such as yogurt and essential oils. Natural products can still cause irritation or allergic reactions on the skin too. Before using any product on your face do a patch test or consult your dermatologist.
