Natural Remedies for Melasma

The overactive pigmentation of the skin or melasma is a common condition, especially to those constantly exposed to the sun’s rays. The over production of melanin is another cause of this. Not to be confused with freckles, melasma results to bigger and darker brown spots with irregular shapes. Here is a list of remedies effective to use against melasma.

Sandalwood
One of the effective ingredients used to lighten the skin is the sandalwood. It works great with the skin complexion improvement. It also decreases the effects of melasma and other more common blemishes on the skin.

Mix sandalwood powder, whole milk, and lemon juice, and turmeric for a paste. Use equal measures. Use the paste on the affected parts of the skin. Using circular motions, scrub the face once the mask is moistened with a splash of water. Lastly, rinse with water and pat to dry. Do this three times a week to achieve the result wanted.

Papayas
A natural exfoliating agent is found in papayas in the form of papain. It is an enzyme good at eliminating dead skin cells as well as the damaged ones.

Make a paste by mashing a ripe papaya. Then add two tablespoons of honey to some mashed papaya paste to at least half a cup. Mask the affected area of the skin with the paste. After 20minutes, use lukewarm water to rinse. This is effective when done at least once a week.

Onion Juice
Onions are packed with compounds rich in sulfur effective at making the dark patches on the skin and other types of discoloration fade.

Get at least three onion and chop them finely. Use cheesecloth to extract the juice. In equal amounts, mix the extract with apple cider vinegar. Use a cotton ball and apply it on the skin affected. After 20 minutes, rinse with warm water. Repeat twice a day for a few weeks.

Turmeric
Cumin, which is found in turmeric spice, has effective antioxidants and other contents able to lighten the skin.

Get five tablespoons of the turmeric powder. Mix it with ten tablespoons of milk. This will turn into a paste. Whole milk is highly recommended as it contains the lactic acid needed to exfoliate the skin. Calcium is also believed to soften the skin. After this, take a tablespoon of gram flour to get a thicker consistency for the mixture. Use the paste on the area, leaving it on for at least 20 minutes. Use warm water to rinse it. Best results come with daily use.

The use of sunscreen prevents conditions like melasma. It also protects the skin from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Drink a lot of water and eat fibrous foods.
