Nine Different Ways To Use Honey

Honey is one of the most nutritious and beneficial all-natural ingredients there is. You can take honey straight from the hive and use it a handful of ways to your advantage. After all, raw and unpasteurized honey is known to have antifungal and antibacterial properties while also promoting healing. Honey is the oldest sweetener on earth and it is even better for your overall wellbeing than the more recently discovered sugar. Unlike sugar, honey will not cause irregular spikes to your blood glucose levels thereby increasing your risk for type 2 diabetes, but rather regulate your glucose levels instead. Honey has come a long way from being a simple sweetener although it is still often used for such purpose. Here are nine more different ways to use honey.

1. Moisturizing Mask

One of the many properties of honey is that it is a natural humectant. This means it can draw moisture from the air to moisturize your skin while also making sure that the moisture is retained in your skin for a longer period of time. Massage a teaspoon of raw honey all over you clean, dry skin then leave it for 15-20 minutes for a moisturizing mask. Rinse with clean water.

2. Cold And Flu Remedy

Honey is a well-known home remedy for treating common colds and flu. Mix honey, lemon, cinnamon, and ginger together in a cup of hot water to make a cheap yet effective remedy for colds and flu symptoms. Drink every two hours for quicker relief.

3. Facial cleanser

Using honey as facial cleanser is great for sensitive and acne-prone skin since it is very efficient and very gentle as well. Raw honey has antibacterial properties that will get rid of any pimple-causing bacteria and healing properties that will reduce inflammation, redness, and soothe the skin. It regulates sebum production without stripping the skin off of its natural moisture. Simply use honey as you would a normal gel cleanser.

4. Treating Wounds And Burns

The natural antibacterial properties of honey can keep wounds and burns from getting infected. Its soothing properties will also reduce inflammation and redness. Simply cover the wound with gauze smeared with honey to provide a moist environment for the skin while also removing any odours.

5. Lip Balm

The moisturizing property of honey is not limited to the skin on your face but includes the skin on your lips as well. Lightly dab some honey on your lips for a shiny finish. You can also liberally apply some honey on your lips then leave it for 10-15 minutes before washing off for a lip moisturizing treatment.

6. Hair conditioner

Just as how honey can moisturize your skin, it can condition your hair as well. Mix half a cup of honey with a quarter-cup of olive oil then warm it slightly on the stove. Apply it on your hair then wrap your hair in a towel or shower cap to allow your scalp and hair to soak in the moisturizing benefits of the honey and olive oil. After a couple of minutes, rinse with cool water.

7. Fade scars

Honey can help lighten your skin to fade scars while its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties decrease the appearance of scars and promote tissue regeneration and healing. Mix a teaspoon of coconut or olive oil with a teaspoon of honey then massage the mixture onto the area in a circular motion using the tips of your finger. After massaging for 1-2 minutes, place a hot washcloth over your skin then leave until cool. Repeat daily.

8. Regulate menstrual cycle

Honey stimulates the production of omega-6 fatty acids which is necessary for regulating your body’s hormonal processes. If you have an irregular menstrual cycle, try taking a glass of warm water or herbal tea mixed with a tablespoon of honey once a day every day to regulate your cycle.

9. Strengthen nails

If you’re nails are weak, brittle, and prone to breakage, try treating it with a tablespoon of honey mixed with a quarter-cup of apple cider vinegar. Soak your nails in the mixture for 10 minutes before rinsing. Repeat weekly for stronger and healthier cuticles and nails.
