Reasons to Eat Malunggay and Sample Recipe

Malunggay or drumstick tree is one of the mostly grown species from the Moringa genus. With the scientific name Moringa oleifera, the plant is seen as fast-growing and drought-resistant. It is native to the Himalayas in the northwestern part of India and it is commonly seen in tropical and subtropical areas. It is also edible and it has various health benefits.

Malunggay contains many vitamins and minerals, that it is called “nature’s medicine cabinet” or “miracle tree” by scientists and health care professionals, as per Super Malunggay. According to the publication, an ounce of the plant leaves has the same vitamin C contents as seven oranges and twice the protein in milk; thus, it also aids in cellular and tissue growth, repair, and development. The publication added that the leaves are high in calcium, about four times the amount of calcium in milk; this means that the plant is beneficial to lactating mothers. Malunggay also contains four times the vitamin A in carrots, which means it helps promote visual health. Also, malunggay contains thrice the amount of potassium in bananas. Potassium facilitates effective impulse transmission and neuromuscular coordination.

According to Ed Lagman’s website, malunggay has over 90 nutrients and 46 sorts of antioxidants and no side effects have been reported to date. As per researcher and clinical pharmacologist Dr. Monica G. Marcu, as cited by the publication, the plant was unique even in small amounts, as it provides adequate amounts of nutrients with few calories.

Anti-Infective and Anti-Illness

Malunggay helps the body resist infection. According to Youth Health Magazine, the vegetable contains the compound pterygospermin, which has antimicrobial properties; thus, it can combat microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses, protecting the body against diseases caused by these microbes.

Malunggay can be prepared as a concoction to wash wounds or sores. As per Medical Health Guide, the plant roots are boiled and the liquid is allowed to cool to a tolerable warm temperature. Also, the malunggay decoction can also be gargled, serving as mouth wash for mouth sores or sore throats.

As cited by Blogspot, malunggay pods act as dewormers and great treatment for liver and spleen disorders. Also, the plant seeds aid in the management of cramps, arthritis, gout, rheumatism, boils, urinary disorders, and sexually transmitted diseases. Also, the plan can relax the body in epilepsy.

Malunggay also contributes to a person’s overall sexual health. According to Food Nutrition, the plant has aphrodisiac action, which boosts one’s vigor and fertility, especially in men. It is added that the plant juice is good for couples who want to improve their married life.

Sample Recipe

Malunggay can be easily included in recipes, such as Stir-Fried Pork and Vegetables. According to My Taste, the ingredients include two cups of malunggay leaves, 500 grams or half kilo ground pork, two cups of string beans (cut in two inches long), two cups of squash (cut in cubes), a teaspoon of olive oil, salt, and pepper.

To prepare, oil is heated in a pan and onion and garlic are sauteed until the onion becomes transparent. Next, the pork is added and is stirred for 15 minutes until it cooks. Then, water is added for the soup base and is covered to boil. Once done and the pork is cooked, the squash is added and is let to simmer. The string beans are also added before the squash cooks; covering is not encouraged, as it will wilt the vegetables. When the beans are cooked, the malunggay leaves are added and then seasoned with salt and pepper.

Overall, malunggay is nutritious that it is added to various meal recipes. With its nutrients, it is capable of boosting the health of a person and an entire family.
