NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are some of the most commonly used drugs for alleviating joint pain and inflammation for over 3 decades now. Some examples are aspirin, ibuprofen and celecoxib, which is a relatively newcomer in the war against headache, sprains, rheumatoid arthritis and many others. One of the nicest things about NSAIDs is the fact that they take effect quickly — often just within a few hours.

So what’s the problem with NSAIDs? Just like with any other pharmaceutical superstars on the planet, these drugs do not come without risk and side effects. Whether available over-the-counter or prescribed by a doctor, NSAIDs may cause all sorts of unfavorable problems such as:

  • Stomach upset and other issues like bleeding and ulcers
  • Fluid retention that leaves your ankles, feet and hands swollen
  • Rashes
  • Kidney problems
  • High blood pressure and heart problems

Indeed, it’s of utmost importance to weigh the benefits and risks of taking NSAIDs (or drugs for that matter) before taking them. Want to attain relief from painful and inflamed joints risk-free? Simple — just opt for some all-natural joint pain and inflammation solutions that are tried-and-tested effective for so many years now. One of these remedies is by applying lemon peels on problem areas or taking it in the form of tea.

Lemons are some of the most effective remedies for a host of maladies known to man, from unflattering dark scars left behind by pimples to high blood pressure that increases one’s risk of having heart disease. Thanks to the impressive amounts of antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals in them, lemons are some of the most widely used home remedies for an assortment of health and beauty problems.

These incredibly sour citrus fruits, in particular their peels, are also very effective against joint pain and inflammation. Why the peels and not the pulp or juice itself? Just like with many other fruits out there, nearly half of all the nutrients in lemons are situated in their peels — yes, the ones you dispose of or use as mere zest! So if you or a loved one is commonly bugged by achy and swollen joints, make sure that you save those lemon peels.

So how can you employ lemon peels in making painful and inflamed joints functional once more? Here’s a couple of ways:

Way #1: As a Fruity-Smelling Liniment

Grab a jar and place the peels of 2 large lemons in it. Pour extra virgin olive oil into the jar, just enough to cover the lemon peels. Cover the jar tightly and allow it to sit for a couple of weeks in a cool and dry spot in your kitchen.

After a couple of weeks, your lemon-based joint pain and inflammation reliever is ready to use! Just place a small amount of it on gauze, and then place it over the problem area. Secure with a large handkerchief, scar or elastic bandage. This all-natural and highly effective remedy for achy and swollen joints is best done before bedtime.

Way #2: As a Fruity-Tasting Tea.

In a large pot, combine 1 liter of distilled water and the peels of 2 large lemons. Go ahead and add the juice of the lemons, too! Bring everything to a boil. Afterwards, allow to cool to room temperature. Stash in the fridge.

Each time your joint is keeping you from performing your usual activities, reheat a cup of the tea in the microwave. Feel free to add a teaspoon of organic honey to taste.
