When wisdom teeth grow at an angle and push against your gums or other teeth, there is surely a great deal of discomfort involved — wisdom tooth pain! But other than pain, the appearance of wisdom teeth can also be accompanied by some other symptoms. It’s something that can give you bad breath as well as a disagreeable taste in the mouth when they are used for chewing. Definitely, it can also give you jaw pain as well as a headache.

There are painkillers available OTC that can help in temporarily managing the pain experienced. However, it’s important to see a dentist if wisdom tooth pain always shows up and interfere with your life — your dentist might recommend for the root source of the problem to be pulled out, which is actually a very common dental procedure.

If you want to get rid of wisdom tooth pain without popping a painkiller in your mouth, there are a few home remedies that can help alleviate the symptom. Read on to know some of them!

Cloves

When wisdom tooth pain strikes, head to the spice rack and grab the bottle of clove. Place 1 to 3 pieces of whole cloves on the problem area and allow the spice’s natural analgesic and antiseptic properties to do the job. If clove oil is available, you may apply it on the erupting wisdom tooth and surrounding gums with a cotton swab.

Garlic

Peel a clove of garlic and slightly have it crushed. Slice off a small piece and place on the affected area. Garlic has amazing antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help put an end to your wisdom tooth pain as well as ward off any infection. Similarly, you may chew on a piece of raw garlic clove for relief.

Onion

Just like garlic, onion can help you attain relief from the nagging pain that erupting wisdom tooth brings. Also, it is very good at zapping bacteria, considerably lowering your chances of an infection which can bring in more pain. If you cannot chew on a piece of raw onion, simply hold it in place with a finger for several minutes.

Peppermint

Did you know that peppermint oil is not only an excellent home remedy for nausea and indigestion, but also wisdom tooth pain? All you have to do is rub some of it on the affected area. After a few minutes, rinse off with water. Similarly, you may add dried peppermint leaves to a cup of hot water. Once lukewarm, use it as mouth rinse.

Guava Leaves

If you have access to a guava tree, get yourself some of its tender leaves. Wash them carefully and start chewing up to a couple of pieces of them. Doing this extracts their juices which possess superb antimicrobial, analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. You may also steep the leaves in a cup of water, and employ as mouth rinse once lukewarm.

Whiskey

Fill half a glass with whiskey and use it as mouth rinse. Swish it in your mouth — the alcohol content of whiskey will not only kill off bacteria that can cause an infection, but also deaden the nerves aggravated by your erupting wisdom tooth. Remember to spit out the whiskey after a few seconds, unless you want to get drunk!
