You may be cutting back on carbs if you are trying to shed off unwanted pounds. However, your body needs carbohydrates in order to function properly. Not only does a low-carb diet ineffective, but it can also leave you feeling weak and depressed. It may also be a cause of embarrassment as insufficient carbohydrates intake may leave your breath reeking!

Below are some telltale signs that you should ditch a low-carb diet and opt for a well-balanced meal that consists of sufficient amounts of carbohydrates and other important nutrients such as protein, vitamins and minerals.

Lack of Energy

Because the main role of carbohydrates is to provide you with energy, it’s not unlikely for you to feel weak when you reduce your consumption of carbohydrates or completely cut them out of your life. If your diet is lacking in carbohydrates, your body has no immediate access to energy, thus you end up feeling tired and listless all day long.

Insufficient Mental Power

Carbohydrates fuel not only your muscles, but also your brain. This is exactly the reason why you may feel like your brain is not working as it used to. You may find it hard to think clearly, focus on what you are doing and even recall things. A low-carb diet is inappropriate for someone who needs to rely on his or her brain most of the time.

Nausea and Dizzy Spells

If it seems like you are feeling nauseated and/or dizzy more frequently than normal, it must be because you are not eating enough foods that contain good amounts of carbohydrates. Nausea and dizzy spells are due to what’s known as ketosis which occurs if your body is not supplied with enough carbs, causing the breakdown of stored fat.

Ketosis leads to several different symptoms, and one of them is frequent headaches. The presence of headaches can worsen your inability to concentrate, something that is also brought about by a diet that’s lacking in carbs. Making sure that you are consuming enough carbohydrates can ward off unnecessary headaches.

Breath That Smells

Does your breath smell like acetone? This should not come as a surprise if you are not getting enough carbs as bad breath is one of the symptoms of a low-carb diet. Due to the characteristic smell, bad breath due to insufficient carbohydrate intake is also known as “keto-breath”, and it’s something that won’t go away with frequent brushing.

Painful Joints

The list of the many unfavorable effects of ketosis does not end with bad breath. When your body enters the ketosis stage, more uric acid is produced — leaving you with painful and swollen joints. As if that’s not enough, you may also be at higher risk of developing kidney stones!

A low-carb diet usually lacks in fruits and whole grains, all of which are excellent sources of fiber. An indigestible type of carbohydrates, fiber is essential for lowering your risk of colon cancer. Since fiber also helps regulate bowel movement, limiting your intake of carbs may leave you with a bout of constipation.

Mild Depression

You need carbohydrates for the production of serotonin, a brain chemical that’s responsible for stabilizing your mood. If you feel that you are feeling miserable all day long, check your diet — it may not include sufficient amounts of carbohydrates. Bring back that smile on your face by turning your back on a diet that restricts carb intake.

Feeling Irritable

Another telltale sign that you are not getting enough carbohydrates is irritability. You will find that even the smallest things can leave you feeling annoyed. A low-carb diet can in fact leave you with a tainted reputation because of possible bursts of anger, all due to the fact that insufficient carb intake can cause serotonin imbalance.
