Guyabano is one of the sour fruits people know today. Also called soursop, guyabano is native to tropical American territories and is widely grown. While its anti-cancer health effects do not have sufficient medical evidence, it still contributes to the promotion of the body;s health. Anti-Cancer

One health benefit of guyabano is its ability to fight cancer and cellular processes that cause it. According to a PubMed research, as cited by Natural Society, graviola extract contains compounds that inhibited several signaling pathways that control cell cycle, cell survival, metabolism, and metastaic properties, resulting to reduction in turmorigenicity and metastasis of orthotopically implanted pancreatic tumors and masses. Hence, guyabano has a promising result when it comes to fighting the deadly disease.

Cardiovascular Health

Guyabano or soursop also helps promote the health of the heart and the blood vessels. According to Dr. Health Benefits, the fruit helps increase good cholesterol and lowers low-density lipoproteins which are responsible to the development of cardiovascular disorders like hypertension, coronary artery disease, and cerebrovascular accident or stroke. Then, the fruit also contains iron, which promotes red blood cell production, preventing anemia and ensuring that oxygen and nutrients are delivered to various parts of the body.

Diabetes Management

Another health benefit of guyabano is its ability to manage diabetes mellitus, an endocrine disorder marked by prolonged increase in blood sugar levels, by controlling blood glucose levels. A clinical study wherein rats induced with diabetes mellitus that were made to consume guyabano extracts demonstrated blood sugar level reduction and reduced liver damage. Thus, the study findings suggest that guyabathe fruit has a protective and beneficial properties on liver tissues subjected to STZ-induced oxidative stress, via lipid peroxidation reduction and insulin and endogenous antioxidant production. While the study findings revealed promising effects in rats, more efforts have yet to be done in humans.

Bone Strength

Guyabano also helps promote the strength of the bones. According to Pinoy Recipe, guyabano contains calcium and copper, which strengthen the bone and assist in bone healing after damage secondary to an accident. Thus, the fruit helps reduce back pain and prevent bone density loss and osteoporosis. To add, normal calcium levels prevent injury, as well as cardiovascular problems related to changes in heart cardiac contraction related to imbalanced calcium levels in the blood.

Fever Management

A person can also use guyabano to manage fever. According to Underground Health, the person takes decoction of leaves internally, or adds the leaves to bathing water. Applying the crushed fresh leaves on the skin promotes healing and a poultice of young guyabano leaves also helps alleviate rheumatism and other skin infections like eczema. One recipe that uses guyabano as ingredient is mango-guyabano soursop smoothie. According to Manila Spoon, the ingredients Guyabano flesh, ripe mango cubes, ice cubes, milk, and sugar. To prepare, as per the publication, the ingredients are all placed in a blender until thick and smooth. Then, sugar or honey is added to taste.
