Causes

High cholesterol levels have several causes. According to Mayo Clinic, genetics is one factor for having high blood cholesterol. As per the publication, a person’s genetic makeup may either stop cellular movement of low density lipoproteins or bad cholesterol from the blood or activate the liver to produce excessive amounts of cholesterol. Moreover, factors that heighten a person’s risk of high cholesterol include eating saturated fat, being obese, having a large waist circumference, having a sedentary lifestyle, smoking cigarettes or tobacco, and being diagnosed with diabetes mellitus.

Signs and Symptoms

High cholesterol does not cause symptoms, as per Health Line. Actually, it may be considered as one of the results in diagnostics tests like complete blood count or lipid profile. As per the publication, it only leads to emergency incidents, such as heart attach or stroke; both are related to the damage from having high cholesterol levels. It is added that having a blood cholesterol level of more than 240 milligrams per deciliter reflects high cholesterol levels. Cholesterol can be rechecked every four to six years.

Home Remedies

While medications that reduce fat are available in the market, home remedies can also be applied to manage high cholesterol levels.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Orange Juice

Both forms of weak acids, apple cider and orange juice are two known remedies for high cholesterol levels. According to Top 10 Home Remedies, the vinegar reduces a person’s cholesterol and triglyceride levels, in addition to fighting other ailments like high blood pressure, acid reflux, gout, and upper respiratory infections. As per the publication, the person mixes one teaspoon of organic apple cider in a glass of water and drinks the mixture twice or thrice a day for a least one month.

On the other hand, orange juice also helps lower blood cholesterol levels, with its vitamin C, flavonoids, and folate. As per a study published in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition,” as cited by Top 10 Home Remedies, it was found that consuming 750 ml of pure orange juice a day can boost high density lipoprotein or goof cholesterol and reduce low density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol in people with hypercholestrolemia. It is added that three grams of phytosterols in orange juice also helps reduce total cholesterol levels by 11 percent and low density lipoproteins by up to 15 percent. In this regard, the publication recommends drinking two glasses of plant sterol-fortified orange juice per day.

Nuts

Another remedy for high cholesterol levels are nuts. According to Home Remedy Shop, nuts contain healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, protein, vitamins, and antioxidants. As per studies, as cited by the publication, consuming a quarter cup of almonds daily can reduce low density lipoproteins by 4.4 percent and a person can eat roasted almonds without oil. Also, walnuts have high omega-3 fatty acid levels, so a person can eat them to reduce low density lipoproteins by 16 percent. While nuts help in reducing cholesterol, they are rich in calories; thus, overeating is not advised.

Fish

In terms of meat sources, fish stands as one of the remedies for high cholesterol levels. According to Best Health Magazine, fish serves as an alternative for meat and just like nuts, it also contains omega-3 fatty acids that reduce low density lipoproteins. It is recommended to consume fish thrice a week. Fish sources like tuna, salmon, sardines, and mackerel are rich in omega-3.

High cholesterol levels in the blood may lead to the development of various heart ailments, which include hypertension, coronary artery disease, and stroke. Thus, it is best to monitor serum lipid levels and seek medical consult when necessary for proper assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
