Endometriosis happens when the lining of the uterus called endometrium grows outside the uterine cavity. It may grow on the ovaries, bowels and even the lining of the pelvis. In rare cases, the endometrium may also grow outside the pelvic region, in some instances as far as the lungs. There is no known cure for endometriosis, but there are medications as well as surgery that can help control the symptoms. A few home remedies for it also exist.

Basically, endometriosis happens when there’s the so-called retrograde menstruation. This means that instead of exiting the body via the vagina, the menstrual blood flows backward, going to the fallopian tubes and into the pelvic cavity. Retrograde menstruation causes the endometrium to flow with it in the wrong direction, growing where it ends up.

Other than retrograde menstruation, experts say that endometriosis may also be brought about by a few other factors. Some of them include a weakened immune system, environmental toxins and genetics.

Women with endometriosis may experience a host of unfavorable symptoms. It all depends on the condition’s current stage, which is determined by the likes of location, depth, size and number. Some women with endometriosis may have mild symptoms only, while others have moderate to severe symptoms. It’s important to note that the severity of the symptoms has nothing to do with the stage of endometriosis. For instance, a woman may have mild endometriosis only but may experience a great deal of pain.

Aside from pain in the lower abdomen before and during menstruation, others symptoms of endometriosis include pain after sexual intercourse, discomfort during bowel movements and heavy menstrual bleeding. A woman with endometriosis may also notice some blood in between periods. Sometimes, the condition may cause infertility.

Just like what’s mentioned before, endometriosis has no known treatment to date, although certain drugs may be administered and undergoing the knife may be warranted to have the symptoms controlled. Then there are also a handful of home remedies for endometriosis that are proven effective. Some of the best are:


Hot Castor Oil Pack

Add 8 drops of lavender essential oil in 1/4 cup of castor oil. Heat the mixture for a few seconds in the microwave. Pour the mixture onto a clean washcloth and place neatly over the lower abdomen. Grab a jar filled with hot water and place on the washcloth. This should be done once daily for 30 to 60 minutes.


Turmeric Tea

Consuming turmeric tea on a regular basis is beneficial for a woman with endometriosis because of its strong anti-inflammatory properties which is courtesy of curcumin in the well-known spice. Those who are not fond of the taste of turmeric tea may simply take 300 mg of turmeric capsules up to thrice a day.

Ginger Tea

Other than turmeric tea, ginger tea is also an excellent home remedy for endometriosis because it possesses impressive anti-inflammatory properties, too. A cup of ginger tea may be taken 3 times a day for best results. Also, sucking on a small piece of fresh ginger root may be done every now and then.


Chamomile Tea

Because of the mild diuretic properties of chamomile tea, it is usually recommended by traditional healers for women with endometriosis. Just like the teas mentioned earlier, chamomile tea also has anti-inflammatory properties. As a bonus, drinking this beverage at bedtime can help a woman with endometriosis have a good night’s sleep.


Maintain an Ideal Weight

Women who have endometriosis and are overweight at the same time are encouraged to shed off excess pounds. They should steer clear of foods packed with fats, sugar and sodium. Having regular exercise is also a good idea, but it’s important to opt for low-impact ones such as walking, swimming and performing yoga.


A Healthy Lifestyle

Definitely, female smokers diagnosed with endometriosis should quit smoking. It’s also a good idea for them to avoid drinking alcohol. Avoiding as much stressors as possible can be very beneficial. Managing stress through the likes of massages, painting, sitz baths and listening to music can help ease the symptoms of endometriosis.
