Breast milk

One way to treat sore nipples is to use your own breast milk to heal them. In this remedy, simply apply a few drops of your breast milk on the affected nipple before you breastfeed. Afterwards, apply some more breastmilk on the nipple and allow to air dry. Do the same with the other nipple. You should do this regularly until the pain and discomfort subsides.

Warmed cloth

Another home remedy that you can try for your sore nipples is to apply a warm compress to them before you breastfeed. Dip a washcloth in warm water and apply it on your breasts. You can also soak your nipples in warm water while you are taking a bath or run some warm water on your breasts to soothe the pain away.

Aloe vera

You can also use aloe vera to treat your sore nipples as it has pain relieving and healing properties. To use this remedy, you should cut open an aloe vera leaf to get the gel from the inside. Apply the gel on the sore nipples and allow to air dry. Wash the area afterwards with lukewarm water and pat dry. You should repeat this remedy for three to four days. Make sure that you wash your breasts thoroughly afterwards before breastfeeding your baby.

 Moisturize

Dry and cracked nipples can also be due to lack of moisture. So it is only right that you moisturize it. You can use breast milk as stated above or lanolin that is medical grade to moisten your dry nipples. Just make sure that you wash your nipples afterwards before feeding your baby.

Ice

You can also use ice to help soothe your sore nipples if you like as the cool temperature can help numb the area for a short period of time. Wrap some ice cubes in a piece of clean cloth and massage it on the sore areas. Not only will the pain lessen but the swelling will diminish too. You can repeat this remedy as many times as you want. You can also use frozen vegetable packs to alleviate the pain.

Basil leaves

Basil leaves are not just for adding flavor to your dishes but they can also be used to remedy sore nipples. What this herb can do is to speed up the healing process and alleviate the dry, cracked, bleeding, and painful nipples. Get some basil leaves and wash thoroughly before you grind them into a paste. Apply afterwards on the sore nipples and allow to air dry. See to it that you wash your nipples thoroughly to remove the paste before you breastfeed your baby. You can repeat this remedy three to five times a day for one week.
