Most of the time, a sudden drop in the blood pressure is the culprit behind that sensation that you are about to faint. So many different things can cause the blood pressure to drop instantly, from standing up too quickly to a severe emotional trauma, such as seeing something gory on the internet.

There are instances, too, in which the feeling like you are going to pass out can be due to having low levels of sugar in the bloodstream, dehydration, being anxious or hyperventilating, which is breathing too fast.

Below are some of the things that you may do if it seems like you are about to pass out:

Lie Down

If it’s possible for you to lie down, then do so. As earlier mentioned, one of the most common reasons for feeling like you are going to faint is a sudden bout of low blood pressure.

Blood is allowed to reach the brain effectively when you lie down, making sure that the brain cells are getting enough oxygen. As soon as the fainting feeling goes away, don’t attempt to stand up very quickly from a lying position, though — it’s something that can make you feel like you are about to faint all over again!

Put Your Head Between Your Knees

Worry not if you cannot lie down because you are in a public space. Sitting down and putting your head between your knees can facilitate the flow of blood to your brain. Remain in such position for a couple of minutes until that feeling like you are about to pass out goes away on its own.

Increase Your Blood Volume

There are a couple of things that you may do to increase your blood volume, thus making sure that your brain cells are getting all the oxygen they need by means of the bloodstream.

First, consume something salty like a pretzel or two or canned soup — the sodium content will cause your blood volume to increase temporarily. Second, drink lots of water. Just like what’s stated above, one of the usual reasons behind having that feeling like you are going to pass out is dehydration.

Have Some Food

Are you on a strict diet because you want to lose weight? Then don’t be surprised if you are feeling all sorts of strange symptoms such as feeling like you are about to faint. Being on a fad diet causes your blood sugar levels to drop, and this is something that can definitely leave you feeling like you are going to faint anytime soon.

Needless to say, the solution to this is quitting your dieting and putting something in your mouth.

Relax

Sometimes, being in an anxious state can make it seem as though you are going to pass out. Feeling faint is actually experienced by a lot of people who are suffering from anxiety.

If it’s quite obvious that it is your anxiety that’s making you feel you’re about to faint, relax. It is definitely a good idea for you to seek the help of a therapist or psychiatrist to have your anxiety treated or managed.

Take Slow Deep Breaths

Hyperventilating — it’s something that can make you feel like you are about to pass out. Doctors say that breathing too fast can cause your blood to be oversaturated with oxygen, which is not a good thing as it can actually make you feel dizzy or lightheaded. If you are hyperventilating and it is making you feel like you are going to faint, breathe through a brown paper bag or simply take slow, deep breaths.

WARNING: If it seems like you are feeling like you are about to pass out most or all of the time, make sure that you let your doctor know about it.
