No, brushing your teeth and using mouthwash won’t make that acetone smell on your breath go away. That’s because the odor is not coming from your mouth, but from deep within your body.

According to doctors, there are a handful of things that can make the breath of a person smell like acetone. However, two of the most common reasons behind such are diabetes and a low-carb diet. But no matter the case, there’s only a single cause behind having acetone breath, and that is the production of ketones in the body.

Put simply, ketones are compounds that are produced when your liver breaks down fat stored in it so that it may be used by the body as fuel. There are many different reasons why this happens:

In people with diabetes, the cells cannot properly utilize sugar or glucose in the bloodstream. To help keep the body stay energized, the liver springs into action by turning fat stored in it into energy the cells may use.

Those who steer clear of foods containing carbohydrates are supplied with no energy. This prompts the liver to intervene by breaking down its fat content so that the body’s cells can obtain the fuel they need.

Just like what’s mentioned earlier, ketones are naturally produced as fat stored in the liver are broken down into fuel and released in to the bloodstream so that they can get to the cells that necessitate them.

There is really no problem if ketones are present in the body. However, too much of it can put one’s health in grave danger. It’s for the fact that high levels of ketones can make the blood acidic, which is not good for the organs. If the normal pH of the blood is not reinstated, it’s not unlikely for the organs to end up damaged.

Still the body will attempt to get rid of excess ketones within. One of the ways it does so is by flushing them out via the urine. Another is thorough the respiratory system, and it’s exactly for this reason why the smell of the breath of someone who has diabetes or is on a low-carb diet is like acetone — ketones smell just like acetone.

Too much ketones in the body can be dangerous. Eventually, you may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, confusion, excessive urination, abdominal pain and difficulty in breathing. Seeking medical attention right away is a must if these symptoms are encountered.

If your breath consistently smells like acetone and you believe that you have no diabetes or you know that you are not on a low-carb diet, make sure that you consult your doctor about it.
