It is said that the most common form of hair loss is the kind that runs in families — it’s not unlikely for you to lose your hair gradually as you get older if you have family members suffering from such cosmetic ordeal. Without a shred of doubt, the use of hair caring and styling products with harsh ingredients and excessive heat when coming up with the ‘do of your liking can also contribute to hair loss, say the experts.

Did you know that there are a handful of other things that can cause hair loss? Even if you don’t have the baldness gene or you rely on hair products that contain mild and all-natural ingredients, it is still highly possible for you to lose your mane because of the following little-known causes of hair loss:

Having Thyroid Problems

Whether your thyroid gland is overactive or underactive, it’s not unlikely for your hair to fall off because that’s one of the symptoms of having a thyroid disease. It’s a good thing that thyroid problems can be cured, and having what you have treated can put an end to your mane problem.

Suffering From Iron-Deficiency Anemia

Just like what the disease’s name suggests, it is the kind of anemia brought about by a deficiency in iron. The signs and symptoms of iron-deficiency anemia come aplenty, and one of them is hair loss. The inclusion of iron-rich foods in the diet or intake of iron supplements can help address the problem. However, there are instances wherein it is also caused by excessive loss of blood and trouble with proper iron absorption.

Taking Certain Drugs

There are numerous over-the-counter and prescription drugs that can potentially cause hair loss. Some of them include medications for arthritis, gout, blood pressure and certain heart problems. Some antidepressants, birth control pills as well as vitamin A supplements can also cause your tresses to fall. So if you are taking any of the mentioned drugs and you notice some unfavorable changes in your hair, let your doctor know about it.

Giving Birth to a Child

It’s not unlikely for pregnant women to have stunning hair while they’re in the family way due to the hormonal changes in their bodies. The problem is hair loss usually strikes about three months after childbirth as the hormone levels return to normal. Fret not because hair loss due to childbirth is something that’s temporary.

A Diet That’s Lacking in Protein

Other than making your muscles bigger and stronger, protein has so many other functions. For instance, a diet that does not supply the body with enough protein can make your hair fall off — it can damage existing hair and prevent hair follicles from functioning optimally. According to nutrition experts, you may notice that your mane is thinner about 2 to 3 months of going for a diet that is deficient in protein.

Having an Unbalanced Diet

It is said that a diet that’s lacking in B vitamins can lead to hair fall. On the other hand, having too much vitamin A in the diet can also cause the same problem. Evidently, the secret to having gorgeous hair is going for well-balanced meals.

Rapid Loss of Weight

Are you crash dieting to get rid of unwanted pounds very quickly? If you consider your hair as one of your best assets, then don’t. Extreme weight loss is something that’s commonly associated with hair fall because of the fact that dieting cuts off the hair follicles’ supply of vitamins and minerals. Also rapid loss of weight can be very stressful to the body.

Undergoing Excessive Psychological Stress

Have you just gone through life issues such as death of a loved one, divorce or unemployment? Chances are hair loss will strike a couple of months after. The good news is hair loss brought about by psychological stress is a temporary issue. Once you get past it, your mane will grow back to normal in a few months.
