Constipation can make you feel irritated and bloated. It can cause health problems in the gastrointestinal system and have side effects such as bleeding and indigestion. An easy remedy for constipation is laxatives, but constant use of laxative will cause the bowel muscles to weaken and make your constipation worse. The goal is to have regular bowel movements. Here are some natural remedies you can try at home to help relieve constipation and improve bowel movements.

Natural Remedies:

Extra Fiber – Dietary fiber goes mainly in the colon instead of the bloodstream. Fiber then lingers in the color absorbing water and bulking up your stool. This helps the stool pass through the colon faster and easier. Include high fiber foods such as whole-wheat cereals, pasta and bread. Fruits and vegetables high in fiber like apple, berries, broccoli and pineapples are great for constipation. There are also natural fiber supplements you can take with your smoothie or oatmeal.

Water Intake – If you’re disposed to constipation, makes sure to drink two glasses of water in the morning to help the digestive system. Water helps flush out toxins in the body and improve bowel movements. It also helps soften stool, if you problems with constipation, increase water intake before taking any medication or laxative. For best result drink warm water with lemon slices before and after meals.

Prunes – Prunes are a known natural remedy for constipation. Prunes are packed with insoluble fiber, this works as a natural sorbitol. Prunes are great for the gastrointestinal system. Prunes may not be the most delicious fruit or juice, but drinking a glass of prune juice a day can dramatically improve bowel movement. If you start to suffer from excessive bowel movement decrease intake of prunes.

Probiotics – Processed food, greasy and fatty meals and excess sugar decreases natural bacteria in the stomach and affect the digestive system. It’s important to have good bacteria or probiotics in the stomach to maintain regular movement and digestion. Yogurts are high in probiotics. Eating one cup of yogurt a day can relieve constipation.

Dandelions – Dandelion tea like prunes have soluble fiber that improves bowel movement and detoxify the body.

Milk – Constipation is said to be associated with lactose intolerance. If you have constipation, try lowering dairy intake.

Exercise – Exercise can prevent constipation. Work that requires you to sit at a desk all day can affect the bowel. Being active will keep the colon muscles moving, making stool movement easier. There are exercises that help increase bowel movements such as yoga.

Steam – Squatting on top of a bowl of warm water can help loosen up the rectum and improve bowel movements. Steam in the bowl will help loosen the sphincter and make the stool pass faster.

Coffee – A cup of coffee in the morning can help increase energy and help boost the digestive system momentarily. Drinking a cup will improve bowel movement, but excessive amounts of caffeine will do the opposite effect.
