Despite the fact that these hard drinks are made from various natural fruits, sugars, berries, sugarcanes, and grains, the sugars are just converted to alcohol while in the process of fermentation and distillation.

If you are the type to monitor your sugar and carbohydrate intake, you have to stick with hard drinks. Cocktails when mixed with other drinks are packed with sugar-rich sodas and other fruit juices. Hard alcohol, unfortunately for calorie watchers, contain calories.

When barley, wheat, corn, or rye is turned into a grain mash, whiskey is produced. Whiskey has different names and categories based on the ingredients used and the place it was produced. Whiskey usually contains about 40 percent alcohol. It has neither carbohydrates nor sugar added.


Another alcohol drink with a grain base, vodka commonly contains 30 percent to 50 percent in volume. Common ingredients are wheat, potatoes, and ryes. Avoid flavored vodkas as they contain added sugar. Go for straight vodkas to avoid the sugar content.


Rum is made from molasses and sugarcane. It does not contain any added sugar or carbohydrates. Rums have different kinds: amber rum, dark rum, white rum, spiced rum, and aged rum. The general is the darker the rum, the older it is. With the right oak casks, rum can spend years and years in aging. 35 percent is the average alcohol content of rum by volume.

Flavored with juniper berries, gin is a product with a grain base. Other ingredients it could be made from are orange, lemon, lime peel, and even grape fruit.
