Suicide is not a mental disorder. Rather, it is a potential consequence of a mental disorder which is oftentimes highly treatable. Many associate suicide with depression. However, experts say that it’s something that may be committed by someone who has bipolar disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders.
Below are some telltale signs that a person may be contemplating suicide:
Excessive moodiness or sadness
It appears as though the individual has been moody or depressed for several days, weeks or months already.
Sudden calmness
Does it seem like the person has suddenly shifted from being moody or depressed to totally calm? According to experts, it can be a sign that he or she is determined to commit suicide.
Withdrawal
One of the many hallmark signs of depression is withdrawal — the individual may prefer to stay away from his family and friends, and is also no longer interested in things that he or she once loved.
Insomnia
Another very common sign of depression is failure to get a good night’s sleep, and it’s something that can actually exacerbate the individual’s current mental state.
Sleeping too much
Other than not catching enough Z’s, some people with mental illnesses that are at risk of committing suicide may actually spend a lot of time sleeping.
Hopelessness
If the person is always telling you that it seems like there is nothing to look forward to in the future, it can be a sign that he or she is considering suicide.
Changes in appearance
Since the individual is no longer interested in the future, he or she may quit taking good care of his or her appearance — some really noticeable physical changes are present.
Dangerous behavior
Be wary if the person is suddenly engaging in activities that can put his or her life in danger as well as those of others around, such as reckless driving or unprotected sex.
Talking about being a burden
At times, someone who is at high risk of suicide may believe that he or she is just a burden to family and friends.
Substance abuse
Many people with mental illnesses resort to drug use or excessive alcohol intake in order to dampen their emotions, and it is known as a risk factor for suicide.
Looking for a way to commit suicide
Is the person asking you strange questions such as what the most painless way to commit suicide is or what drugs can make him or her die while asleep? It’s a warning sign.
Making preparations
An individual who is suffering from a mental illness may be considering suicide if he or she is doing certain preparations such as buying a weapon or poison.
Talking about suicide
When someone says that he or she is thinking about suicide, it should be taken very seriously. However, do take note that not all of those who are contemplating suicide will mention it.
What you should do:
Don’t feel afraid to ask the person if he or she is actually thinking about suicide.
Never leave the person alone. Ask the help of family members and friends.
Take away deadly weapons, pills and other things that can be used for committing suicide.
If the person is being treated for a mental disorder, get in touch with his or her doctor.
Call 911 or take the individual to the emergency room.
