Goiter refers to the swelling of the neck or larynx due to thyroid gland enlargement. Usually, people with this condition have large neck, which is associated to impaired function of the thyroid gland. The following are the causes, signs and symptoms, and home remedies for goiter.

Causes

Goiter has various causes, according to Medical News Today. As per the publication, one cause if iodine deficiency, which stands as the lead cause of the condition globally, barring developed countries that incorporate iodine to salt. Other causes of goiter include autoimmune disease, women more that 40 years old, hypothyroidism, hypothyroidism, nodules, smoking, hormonal changes, thyroiditis, lithium, iodine overconsumption, and radiation therapy.

Signs and Symptoms

Goiter presents several signs and symptoms. According to Mayo Clinic, these include visible swelling at the base of the neck, which may be evident upon shaving or applying make-up; a tight feeling in the throat area, coughing, hoarseness, difficulty breathing, and difficulty swallowing. As per Medical News Today, a person with goiter may experience other symptoms, depending if the goiter is due to an underlying cause. Examples are weight loss, hair loss, increased appetite, palpitations, nervousness, increased sweating, heat hypersensitivity, and fatigue secondary to overactive thyroid.

Home Remedies

Goiter is usually managed by medications like thyroid hormone replacement and surgery; however, home remedies can also be applied to help manage the condition.

Watercress

One remedy for goiter is watercress, also called scurvy grass. According to Home Remedies For Life, the plant is an excellent source of iodine, in addition to germanium, sulfur, vitamin B, and other antioxidants, which also help the body get rid of unwanted substances like toxins and free radical. As per the publication, watercress can be crush, ground, or blended until two tablespoons of paste are formed. Next, the paste is applied to the neck and is left on for 15 to 20 minutes. Then, the neck is rinsed with water and is patted dry. As an option, two tablespoons of crushed watercress are mixed into half glass of water. The resulting mixture is consumed thrice a day for at least five to six weeks. The remedy is regularly done to combat goiter.

Flaxseed

Flaxseed serves as another remedy for goiter. According to Rapid Home Remedies, flaxseed is also a rich source of antioxidants, just like watercress. The seed also contains anti-inflammatory properties, which aid against thyroid gland selling. Flaxseed paste is also used by the ancient Indian medicine system Ayurveda in decreasing pain at the base of the neck. To prepare, as per the publication, whole flaxseed is crushed to obtain about two tablespoons of flaxseed powder. Then, water is mixed to form a paste. After that, the paste is applied on the throat and is left for about 20 to 25 minutes. Finally, the paste is washed off and is patted dry using a clean cloth. As an alternative, flaxseed can also be boiled in water and the resulting preparation is used to was the neck and throat to relieve swelling.

Dandelion

Another way to manage goiter is through the use of dandelion. According to Ayurveda, as cited by Top 10 Home Remedies, dandelion leaves can reduce neck swelling, as well as reduce the discomfort brought about by the condition. As per the publication, the person gets and smears two to three dandelion leaves with a clarified butter on one side. Then, the leaves are warmed and are placed onto the goiter. They are secured with a bandage or tape and are left on for few hours.
